- Dataset placement is still critical
- Manage some small number of critical objects
– Even a cache hit is Ms. vs Mcs. for a pool hit
– ACS rules - Let SMS have the rest
- Give it all to SMS – You DIE!!!
– I would love to see the data to refute this…
In our industry, many things can be qualified by an 80/20 rule. In general, this means that 20% of the “things” are responsible for 80% of the work. Applying this approach to the total number of datasets for your system, means that some small (manageable) number of datasets receive most of the access.
So…. Managing some small number of datasets using either ACS rules, or different storage classes pointing to specific devices rather than the general pool can provide good results – then let SMS have the rest.
If you just give everything to SMS you will DIE !!!
SMS does not know how to manage the performance objectives.
